I am the coordinator of the insurance program, a type of insurance and risk management program here in Fanshawe. We are accredited both by the Insurance Institute and also global rims. We offer both the CIP and the CRM [Certificate of Risk Management designation] credits, which is, I think, unique to our institution.

I have loved working with this group. They’re dedicated, they’re so smart, and I’m looking forward to spending more time in Calgary with them. I think they’re going to great.

I’ve worked in underwriting my entire career, and my original education was as a teacher. So [at Fanshawe], it was a nice little happy marriage of insurance and teaching.

I’m actually in marketing, so my strengths include just talking. And they were like, ‘Hey, you know what? We’re going to be talking to a lot of people and so we need to get somebody who talks [well].’ So, they threw me in there.

I have some experience with competition before, for marketing, so hopefully that will translate. To prepare for this, I’ve tried to crash course myself on risk insurance as much as I can. I think I’ve done all right so far. But in terms of what I want to become, I think a broker is really where really where I want to go with my marketing degree at the end of this. It feels like the right fit for me.

Much like Jeff, I’m also a marketing student. This competition is also my first introduction to insurance. But I am familiar with competition cases like this. Jeff and I actually just won first place in Ontario for advanced marketing in Niagara a couple months ago.

They saw Jeff and I and said, ‘Hey, you know what? There’s a really cool insurance competition coming up that we think you guys would like. So for sure, we jumped in.

We’ve been working alongside Holly and Nate for the last couple of months, and they’ve been teaching us a lot about the [P&C insurance] industry. I love risk management. I think it’s just a fun way to use my marketing skills and analyze a case and really jump into that.

I’ve completed five of the 10 CIP exams, with another three coming in the next two months before I graduate. Simply put, I got into insurance because I want to help people protect what they value most.

Hollie Diane Judith Knott

I got into insurance because I’m really interested in the agriculture sector of it. I kind of want to be a broker, but I’m sort of leaning towards underrating right now. But it’s really just a great industry to be a part of. There are really great people, and I’ve met so many unique individuals along the way. There are so many great opportunities within the industry, so I think it’s a really great move.
