SGI announces next president and CEO

Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) has announced the appointment of Kent Campbell as president and chief executive officer.

Campbell, currently president and CEO of the Crown Investments Corporation of Saskatchewan (CIC), will join SGI on Aug. 1, and assume the role of SGI president and CEO on Oct. 1.

The appointment follows the May 20 announcement that Penny McCune will be retiring Oct. 15 after more than 40 years at SGI.

Campbell has been CIC president and CEO since 2020, SGI says in a press release Friday.

“In that capacity, he has worked closely with SGI, providing strategic direction, oversight and performance management,” the insurer says. “He brings deep experience in public sector leadership, including nearly 30 years with the Government of Saskatchewan and close to two decades at the deputy minister level.”

SGI board chair Gary Vidal calls Campbell “a thoughtful and experienced leader who understands both the complexity of our environment and the importance of the work our employees do every day. Kent brings strong leadership in governance and financial stewardship, and we are confident he will build on the strong foundation in place at SGI.” 

During his time at CIC, Campbell worked closely with SGI and helped guide the organization through a period of change. He also “has a strong understanding of SGI’s mandate, including the importance of the Auto Fund to Saskatchewan people,” the public insurer says.

Before becoming president and CEO of SGI on June 1, 2022, McCune contributed extensively to the company, SGI said May 20. Her contributions included key roles in improving traffic safety in Saskatchewan; transforming SGI into a customer-centric organization; establishing SGI Canada’s out-of-province operations, including its expansion into the Alberta insurance market; and, serving as interim chief operating officer of Coachman Insurance.

McCune’s long career with SGI began in 1985 when she joined SGI as a temporary junior clerk. She joined the insurer’s executive leadership team in 2012, serving as executive vice president of customer and distribution experience. She served as executive vice president of claims and salvage and executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Auto Fund before becoming SGI’s first female president and CEO.
