TORONTO, ON, MAY 6, 2026/insPRESS/ – ClaimsPro, Canada’s leading provider of independent claims adjusting services and a Davies company, today announced the appointment of Capt. Jone Abotnes as Marine Surveyor.
Jone (pronounced John) is an accomplished Master Mariner with over 30 years of experience encompassing maritime operations, port management, and global trade logistics. Following early experience as a Lieutenant in the Royal Norwegian Navy, Jone gained commercial experience as a Chief Officer, later Ship Captain, supporting cargo operations for chemical tankers. He later worked as Port Captain and Agency Manager overseeing port operations across Southeast Asia and Oceania, and he was recently the Chief Operations Officer for a marine surveyor in Norway. Jone holds his Master Unlimited License (the highest maritime certification under the STCW Convention), and he completed a Master of Science in Management of Demanding Marine Operations at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
“Capt. Abotnes brings a wealth of knowledge and seafaring experience, allowing us to better meet our clients’ needs, as well as working with the Protection & Indemnity Club globally,” says Laurie Andrews, Director of Marine Services for ClaimsPro. “This important addition to ClaimsPro’s Marine team will broaden our reach to many clients around the world who come into our ports.”
In his new role, Jone will support marine losses, hull & machinery, technical surveys, and other claims on seafaring vessels, working alongside ClaimsPro’s Marine Services team headed by John Seyler, Executive General Adjuster / VP, Transportation Equipment & Cargo (TEC); Ana Batista, AVP TEC; and Laurie Andrews. He will be a major asset in incident investigations and marine failures, particularly with his specialized knowledge of chemical tankers.
“I am very excited to be joining ClaimsPro, especially since my early days have been so welcoming,” says Capt. Abotnes. “I know my knowledge and experience will come to good use and will continue to grow as I meet new colleagues, clients and claims scenarios. I am very happy to be part of such a great team supporting our marine clients!”
The Marine Services Unit, part of ClaimsPro’s Specialty Risk Division (SRD), is comprised of highly experienced, senior surveyors providing specialized claims services to the marine and cargo industries across Canada. The team is equipped to provide relevant insight to process claims quickly with fast on-scene response, bringing decades of experience and an in-depth understanding of the unique requirements for handling marine related losses.
Following Davies’ acquisition of ClaimsPro’s parent company, SCM Insurance Services, in November 2025, ClaimsPro became part of Davies. For Marine clients, this has brought access to a broader international network and a wider set of specialist capabilities, spanning areas such as major and complex loss, damage engineering, emergency response, forensic services, loss control, consulting, and technology. The integration also provides greater exposure to Davies’ evolving digital and data capabilities, including enhanced technology and AI and agentic AI platforms, supporting a more connected and insight‑driven approach to complex marine claims.
